Elizabeth Nabel

Elizabeth Nabel is Director of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute where she oversees an international research portfolio with an annual $3.0 billion budget. She has extensive experience in biomedical research, clinical medicine, public health education campaigns, and policy formulation. Dr. Nabel previously directed the Division of Cardiology and the Cardiovascular Research Center at the University of Michigan, where as a physician-scientist, she made substantial contributions to our understanding of molecular genetics of cardiovascular diseases. At the NHLBI, Dr. Nabel has developed a broad-based institute Strategic Plan and subsequently has launched new scientific programs in the genomics of complex diseases, stem and progenitor cell biology, translational research, global health, and implementation science. She is a member of the Institute of Medicine and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, serves on the Editorial Boards of the New England Journal of Medicine and Science Translational Medicine, and the Federal Coordinating Council for comparative effectiveness research.
